Carnes and Alfred: Shipwrights in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

This is an eight-part essay about 19th century Greenpoints transformation from isolated farmland into a center of shipbuilding and waterborne commerce. In it, I interweave the story of our neighborhoods earliest industrialization with my own family history, focusing on my great, great-grandfather, Carnes Eddey a shipwright from Greenpoint.

The series was written for Brooklyn’s Greenpoint News.
